WINE REGION
Muntenia and Oltenia
Country Romania

Muntenia and Oltenia are two wine regions associated together located in the south of the Southern Carpathians of Romania. The history of the region is very old and the origin of viticulture in the area of Dealurile Munteniei, proof being the archaeological finds, ceramic pieces, and toponymy with the first mentions which date from the 4th century. The region is well-known for its red wines from Fetească Neagră and with the excellent natural conditions for grape growing. It has a temperate-continental climate with hot summers, long and dry autumns and short winter with reddish-brown soils along with red clay, marl and limestone-rich portions in some areas, abundant in iron oxide and calcium carbonate. The Muntenia and Oltenia regions are divided into altogether nine sub-regions including Ștefăneşti, Sâmbureşti, Drăgăşani, Banu Mărăcine, Mehedinți, Pietroasele, Cernătești, Dealu Mare and Segarcea. The region is probably the most promising one in terms of export with loads of small boutique wineries which are making some of the best white, red and sparkling wines of Romania.
